If there's one thing we need, it's more 13-year-old mothers

That, at least, must be the thinking behind the efforts of anti-choice zealots to prevent a 13-year-old girl in Florida from obtaining an abortion:

Fla. agency gets teen's abortion blocked

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.The state's social services agency was granted a court order to block an abortion for a pregnant 13-year-old girl living in a state shelter, prompting an emergency appeal Wednesday by the American Civil Liberties Union.

The ACLU in its appeal on the girl's behalf cited Florida statutes that protect a minor's decision to decide on an abortion.

"No (Department of Children & Families) regulation or state law can override a constitutional right as recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court," said Howard Simon, the organization's executive director for Florida.

"But putting aside the legalisms, forcing a 13-year-old to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term against her wishes not only is illegal and unconstitutional, it's cruel."

The girl learned she was pregnant two weeks ago and planned to have an abortion Tuesday. Her caseworker arranged for transportation and help. But the state Department of Children & Families asked a Palm Beach County juvenile judge Tuesday morning to block the procedure.

The state agency argued the 13 1/2-week pregnant girl - described as L.G. in court documents - is too young and immature to make an informed medical decision, according to the ACLU appeal.

...

But DCF spokeswoman Marilyn Munoz said state law prohibits the department from consenting to an abortion for a minor in any instance. "It's not our decision. We stand in different shoes. We're held to a higher accountability," Munoz said.

"It's not our decision"? What the fuck is that supposed to mean? Damn right it's not your decision: so stop getting court injunctions to prevent her from doing what she wants to do.

This is just fucking sick. An editorial in the Miami Herald puts it well:

Forcing babies to have babies is now the official policy of Florida's child-welfare agency.

The sadists running the Department of Children & Families are trying to stop a 13-year-old girl under foster care from getting an abortion.

They say that she's too immature to decide whether or not she should have the baby.

The logic is diabolically cockeyed. If the girl isn't mature enough to make a sensible choice about her pregnancy, how can she possibly be mature enough to care for a newborn infant?

...

Two years ago, DCF fought to block a severely retarded Orlando woman from having an abortion. In that case, the agency litigated for so many months that the operation could not be safely performed. The woman gave birth, and the infant was put up for adoption.

Such ruthless intrusion into the most private matters is a trademark of the new Republican right, which seldom wastes an opportunity to whip the pro-life crowd into a tizzy. It will likely happen again with L.G's case.

With the governor's political image in mind, DCF carefully tries to mask its meddling as the act of a caring and concerned overseer. In fact the driving but unspoken philosophy behind most of the new abortion restrictions is punitive.

You got knocked up, kid. That's what you get for fooling around.

Now everybody but you gets to decide your future.

That's basically what the state of Florida is telling L.G.

...

A spokeswoman for DCF Secretary Luci Hadi said the agency is doing ''what we believe is in the best interest of the child.'' Sure. If you happen to believe that unplanned pregnancy is a real character-builder for teenage girls.

Don't be surprised if DCF uses the same cold-blooded tactics against L.G. as it did against the retarded woman in Orlando -- dragging the case out in court until it's too late for a safe abortion.

If someone put your 13-year-old daughter through that kind of cruelty, you'd know exactly what to call it:

Child abuse.

This girl has proven that she is quite capable of making this decision for herself. Read this and tell me otherwise. She is the one trying to do the responsible thing. She may be only 13, but her judgment is obviously superior to that of the DCF; this fact alone should be enough to let her do what she wants.

I am told that the recent successes of the Republican party are in part due to "South Park Republicans", people in their twenties and early thirties who reject the puritanism of the Religious Right but are otherwise amenable to the GOP message:

We might have long hair, smoke cigarettes, get drunk on weekends, have sex before marriage, watch R-rated movies, cuss like sailors—and also happen to be conservative, or at least libertarian.

In other words, frat boys who aren't about to stop hooking up with drunk sorority girls but who don't want to have to feel guilty about using the word 'faggot'.

Somehow, the GOP managed to convince these people of the ludicrous notion that the Republican party and libertarianism have anything to do with one another. Happy now, assholes? This is what you voted for, 'South Park Republicans'; enjoy life under the party of fundamentalism.
